    • Completed engine oil change. Changed the oil filter, changed the oil drain plug gasket and torqued it. Filled with oil, and checked level. Reset maintenance light. Tires are fine, brakes are fine, no fluid leaks.
    • Inspected the power steering system. Checked out the pump, reservoir and lines. Checked fittings at the rack as well. No leaks. Fluid level was right at the cold low mark upon arrival. Flushed the fluid and left it at the Cold max mark. Power steering feels better now and still no leaks.

    • Completed engine oil change, changed the oil filter and filter O ring. Torqued the filter, also replaced the drain plug gasket and torqued the drain plug. Filled oil and reset maintenance reminder. During inspection found that the front upper and lower control arm bushings are slightly torn causing front tire edge wear. Noticed that the front tires are a different brand of tire than the rear. No oil leaks visible on the bottom of the engine or transmission. Noticed very slight amount of dirt and fluid towards the passenger side top of the front of the engine. Does not seem to be harming anything at this time. Scanned faults in the vehicle and printed the report. Found multiple codes stored in the vehicle that would require further diagnostics.

    • Completed replacement of the front and rear pads and rotors. Also replaced the brake pad wear sensors front and rear. One on the driver front side, one on the passenger rear side. Torqued hardware to spec. Made sure to put the special lug nut socket back where I found it on the passenger rear under the hatch mat by the spare tire. Test drove to bed the pads in and had no issues.
    • Completed engine oil and filter change. Torqued the drain plug and the filter. Filled and checked oil. Slight oil leak on the front of the engine. Cleaned off for a better pin point next time. Reset maintenance reminder.

    • 4 faults stored o/a – engine did long crank prior to pulling in shop. Checked for engine oil level or oil leaks, no leaks visible, oil at full mark. Cleared faults and started engine, no faults returned. Check crank position sensor reading and ran through checks for camshaft timing solenoids and timing adjustment while running/driving. All checked OK at this time. Previous shop replaced cam adjuster solenoids and we can find no issue with crank sensor at this time. Performed many starts on vehicle and it never did a long crank symptom or had any faults. We let vehicle sit over night 2 nights and checked cold start in the AM as well as start the engine several times through the day, with test drives – no cel or faults stored. Drained engine oil and took oil sample, refilled with fresh oil and set level to full mark. Fine metal debris still visible in oil – same as last 2 changes. Performed test drive and scanned for faults again – no faults stored, engine is running well at this time. We suspect an oil supply issue to the timing components during cold start/initial start, intermittently which is causing timing faults and extended crank symptom. Based on fine metal debris in oil on last 3 oil changes, suspect internal engine damage from driving vehicle with failed cam adjuster and oil control valve (we fixed last visit) and have verified the repairs 2x and find no issues at this time other than the CEL returning after the customer picks up the vehicle. We cannot replicate the symptom after several attempts to re-create and diagnose.

    • Car idled OK on arrival but had 2 faults stored: P228C00 Fuel pressure regulator A exceeded control limits, pressure too low P240700 Evap leak detection pump sense, circuit intermittent/erratic Checked timing chain measuring block, bank 1 phase position is at 0.3*. Removed oil cap while engine idle, massive vac in valve cover while running, oil cap is leaking oil. Recommend replacing PCV with latest revision and seeing if evap or idle issues return. Recommend spark plugs if not replaced in last 30k.
    • Replaced PCV and spark plugs. Cleared faults and test drove. Engine idle was improved and there is much less vac at oil cap when idling.

    • Vehicle started no problem for about 10 starts in a row, completed a battery test and it said "good battery, recharge" meaning the battery could be revived if it was slowly charged long enough. We have seen many issues with this era oem battery – recommend replacement due to age. Put a new battery in and reset the clock, reset the windows and fired it up. Car started just fine and has no issues. Before the battery I put the car in the air and did an underside inspection, no issues were found. Checked engine oil and its right at the full mark. Other fluids and filters are just fine. Pulled codes on the car and they were just voltage codes from the battery being weak, cleared the codes. Set the tire pressure to 35PSI all around and cleared the tpms light. Test drove the vehicle and it drove great. No issues as of now, would recommend trying to drive the vehicle more often to avoid similar issues in the future. Oil service is due in about 1000mi

    • Replaced timing chain, tensioner, guides, cam adjusters, vibration damper, crank seal, acc belt, belt tensioner, coolant pump roller, and engine oil/filter. During road test oil pressure warning came on, checked that oil was at correct level, heard no clattering noise associated with low pressure. Pulled back into shop and unplugged oil control solenoid and cleared faults. Unplugging solenoid causes full oil flow from pump. During second road test with solenoid unplugged no warnings or faults returned. Suspect this has been the ongoing issue and likely caused cam adjusters to fail. Used a gallon BMW/Mini coolant, oil filter, and 4.2L 5w30 synthetic
    • Replaced coolant pump during timing chain replacement.
    • Replaced thermostat.
    • Replaced oil pressure control solenoid, oil/filter, and oil pan. Solenoid is located on engine oil pump requiring exhaust, driveshaft, cv shaft, transfer case, and oil pan removal. Cleared faults And performed VANOS system test via scan tool – system operating as designed at this time. Road tested vehicle – faults/oil warning did not return. When draining oil, noticed fair amount of metallic particles, replaced with fresh oil. Sending oil sample out to be inspected.

    • Changed engine oil and filter, reset service reminder. Checked/set tire pressures and reset TPMS- one tire was at 48psi one tire was at 36 – set all 4 to 35psi. Front tires are showing wear, should rotate tires soon. Topped up washer fluid. Slight oil leak at PCV and oil cap – keep an eye on it, PCV is a common failure and may be pushing excess pressure. No other signs of an issue aside from very slight sign of oil leaking at this time.

    • Removed the old water pump and replaced it with the new part, also replaced the water pump bolts and torqued them. Vacuum tested the coolant system for leaks and it passed. Also vacuum filled the system with coolant and completed factory bleed procedure. Test drove the vehicle afterwards to ensure the coolant system got all the way up to temp and the thermostat opened up like it should. Vehicle operated properly, checked coolant level when I got back, added a splash to it and its now good to go.
    • Replaced the thermostat and completed all the necessary operations to ensure successful replacement. Check water pump story for more details.
