Services Performed
- Started car to pull in and heard VERY loud metallic grinding noise, inspected while idling and found AC compressor is very loud. Shut off engine and found metal debris in ac clutch, ac compressor or clutch has had serious failure and is eating itself. There is metal shaving all around compressor. Recommend new ac compressor. Noise is audible using scope on alternator and bracket, but due to visible issue with ac compressor do no suspect any other issues at this time. All 4 tires were around 25psi – set tire pressures and reset tpms. Cleared faults – no lights on dash during test drive. Topped up washer fluid.
- Removed radiator fan and belt and removed old compressor. AC clutch has failed and noise is obvious spinning by hand. Installed new compressor and new belt. Ran engine and noise is gone, AC blows nice and cold
- Evacuated system and there was about 1lb refrigerant in system – this indicates no leaks present. After compressor replacement pulled vac on system for 15min and tested for leaks. No leaks found. Refilled with specified amount of refrigerant, added about 1oz of oil to system during refill. Compressor cycles on/off normally
